Every week someone asks us how to start in the car key trade. The good news: you do not need a shop front, a franchise or a huge budget. You need three things - the right tools, the right stock, and a reliable way to identify cars correctly. Here is the honest starter plan for the UK and Australia.

Planning your first order? Send us your market and we will suggest a starter assortment matched to local demand - free, no obligation.

Step 1: choose your market and services

UK: huge VW/Ford/Vauxhall volume, strong demand for mobile locksmiths in commuter cities. Australia: Toyota/Holden/Mazda dominance, with ute and fleet work a speciality. Start with add-a-key jobs (customer has a working key) before offering all-keys-lost - it is far more forgiving while you learn.

Step 2: buy the right tools (budget realistically)

Entry kit (roughly AUD/GBP equivalent of a few hundred to low thousands): Xhorse or Autel entry programmer + key cutting solution for the common blade profiles. Add a transponder reader and a small key identification reference (or use our free Key Finder and photo identification). Upgrade to VVDI-class tools when German-car work pays for it.

Step 3: first stock assortment - let the market decide

UK starter: VW Golf 7, Ford Focus/Fiesta, Vauxhall Astra, Ford Transit. AU starter: Toyota Hilux (2015+ smart key), Holden VF Commodore, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi ASX. Around 5-10 SKUs with a few shells and blades covers a surprising share of daily calls. MOQ from 5 units per SKU means you can test without over-committing.

Step 4: get identification right - it is your whole reputation

A key that cannot be programmed is lost money and a lost customer. Build the habit: confirm year, region, keyless-or-not, and read the chip before promising. Free identification services exist for exactly this reason - use them.

Step 5: price and market yourself

Price against the local dealer quote, not against other locksmiths - you are selling convenience and speed. Google Business Profile, local Facebook groups and a simple site are enough to start; referrers from other locksmiths follow once your programming work is clean.
