💬 Ask on WhatsAppSlide the release latch on your fob and pull out the mechanical emergency key. Use it in the door lock cylinder (some models hide the cylinder under a small cover on the handle). If the car has no visible keyhole, check the owner's manual — many are concealed.
With your foot on the brake, hold the fob directly against the engine start/stop button and press it. The car reads the key's RFID chip through the button even when the fob battery is completely dead. This works on most Toyota, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Ford, BMW and Mercedes models.
Many smart-key cars have a hidden slot in the cup holder or center console. Place the fob in the slot (or press it onto the marked pad) and start normally.
Emergency methods get you going, but they are not a fix. Replace the fob battery (CR2032/CR2025) as soon as possible so you are not stranded again.
If the fob is physically broken (washed, cracked, water-damaged) the emergency tricks may fail. You then need a new fob — see our replacement cost guide.
Use the mechanical key inside the fob to open the door, then hold the fob against the start button or place it in the backup slot (cup holder/console) and press start with your foot on the brake.
Once the car is started it will keep running without the fob — you can drive until you switch the engine off. After that, you need the fob (or an emergency start method) to restart.
Nothing dangerous — the engine keeps running. The dashboard may show a key warning. The problem only appears when you stop and try to restart.
The fob's chip may be damaged, the car battery may be too low, or the start system may have a fault. Try the backup slot, check the car battery, then consult a locksmith or dealer.
