How to identify the right car key in three steps

Most key ordering mistakes come from matching the vehicle but not the hardware. Work through these three steps in order and you will pick the correct key almost every time.

1. Match the vehicle, not just the badge

Car makers change key systems inside the same model name. A 2014 Ford Fiesta and a 2017 Ford Fiesta look alike but can use different chips and frequencies, so always confirm the model year (and where possible the generation code, such as Golf 6, Golf 7 or Astra J, Astra K). Our brand guides list every model year we stock, and each model page shows the year ranges covered.

2. Match the key type

Key types split into four common families: blade and transponder keys, remote head and flip keys, smart keys (keyless entry and push-button start), and shells or emergency blades. The key type decides what your customer can do with the key and which programmer you need — a shell swap is not the same job as adding a new smart key.

3. Match the chip and the frequency

The chip sits in the key and talks to the immobiliser. The frequency is how the remote talks to the car. Both are fixed in the hardware and cannot be reprogrammed, so a key with the wrong chip or the wrong frequency simply will not work. Check both numbers before you buy.

Chip types: ID46, ID47, 4D83, 8A and 4A

Across European, Japanese and American vehicles, a handful of transponder families cover most jobs. ID46 (PCF7936) is still the most common chip in European cars, ID47 and ID49 appear on later models, 4D83 and 4D63 dominate many Japanese platforms, and 8A and 4A chips are used on the newest keyless systems. If you order the wrong chip family, the key will not program — and the difference is not visible from the outside, which is why each model page lists the chip type we ship for that vehicle.

Frequency: 315 MHz vs 433.92 MHz

Frequency decides whether the remote talks to the car at all. Roughly, 433.92 MHz covers most of Europe, the UK, Australia and much of Asia, while 315 MHz is common in North America, Japan and some Latin American markets. Some vehicles use both depending on the market they were built for, and a few platforms use 868 MHz for newer keyless systems. If a customer buys the wrong frequency, the car will not lock, unlock or start.

Which programmer do you need?

Most aftermarket smart keys and flip keys can be programmed with tools such as Xhorse (VVDI Key Tool, Mini Prog), KeyDIY (KD-X) or Autel (IM508, IM608), depending on the vehicle. Some late-model vehicles still require online dealer access or a specific subscription. Each key in our tables is tied to the tooling we have tested it with, and if you tell us which equipment you run we will tell you straight whether a specific key is a realistic job for you.

Wholesale car keys for locksmiths and distributors

CarKeyHub supplies auto locksmiths, key cutting shops, garages and importers across the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Our minimum order is 5 units per SKU and you can mix models in a single order, so you can test the vehicles that appear most often in your area before committing to stock. Sample orders are available at wholesale cost and the amount is deducted from your first bulk order. Typical transit times are 5–8 days to the UK, 5–10 days to mainland Europe and 7–14 days to Australia and New Zealand, with duties and taxes charged by your own country on arrival.

Send us a photo of a key or a VIN and we will identify it and quote the matching aftermarket option — identification is free, and there is no obligation to order.
